Medicaid Demographics

To put it bluntly, many Republican politicians think of Medicaid as a program for poor African Americans and Latinos.  Nationwide, however, non-Hispanic whites make up the largest group of program beneficiaries.  According to KFF, the distribution of non-elderly recipients is as follows:

White.............................42%
African American.............19%
Hispanic.........................31%
Other..............................08%

In key electoral states, whites make up an even larger share of Medicaid recipients:
  • Ohio 65%
  • Michigan 60%
  • Wisconsin 60%
  • Pennsylvania 49%
